Ripley’s Believe It or Not! Times Square Kicks-Off President’s Day Weekend With “Historic” Cheese Carving
On February 15 and 16, 2013 “The Cheese Lady” Adds Ripley’s Flare to the
Classic Mount Rushmore Monument Using 160 Pounds of Cheddar
This President’s Day weekend, Ripley’s Believe It or Not! Times Square is offering guests a “taste of history” as master cheese carver Sarah Kaufmann recreates “Mount Rushmore” into “Mount Ripley’s” with 160 pounds of cheddar cheese during a two-day cheese-sculpting demonstration on February 15 and 16, 2013.
Putting an out-of-the-ordinary “Ripley’s” twist on Mount Rushmore, “The Cheese Lady,” Sarah Kaufmann will craft a six foot long wacky replica of the historic national monument of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln. Four oversized blocks of yellow cheddar cheese supplied by Cabot, the Vermont-based cheese producer will be used for carving, and guests will have the opportunity to sample an assortment of Cabot cheeses during the two-day event. The creation of “Mount Ripley’s” begins on Friday, February 15 from 10am to 6pm and will resume on Saturday, February 16 from 10am to 2pm.
“The Odditorium features a number of tributes to past U.S. presidents, from a lock of John F. Kennedy’s hair to a portrait of Abraham Lincoln made completely of pennies,” said Michael Hirsch, president and general manager of Ripley’s Believe It or Not! Times Square. “This President’s Day weekend, guests won’t believe what can be crafted with a block of cheese. And Sarah’s creativity and artistic abilities are the perfect match to construct this bizarre masterpiece.”
Currently creating jaw-dropping sculptures from her studios in Wisconsin and San Diego, as well as various events across the U.S., Sarah Kaufmann is a nationally recognized cheese sculptor. A natural-born “Cheddar Head,” Sarah honed and perfected her talents working in the Wisconsin dairy industry for 16 years. Since turning her cheese carving business into a fulltime career in 1996, “The Cheese Lady” has received hundreds of commissions for her cheese creations, which have captured countless media impressions in print, radio, television newscasts, talk shows, food shows and sportscasts.
