America’s Rarest Autograph in Exclusive New York City Showing
RR Auction to Visit Ripley’s Believe It or Not! Times Square Odditorium for First Public Viewing of Historic Document Signed by Declaration of Independence Signer Button Gwinnett
America’s rarest signature comes to New York for its first and only public preview at Ripley’s Believe It or Not! Times Square. Presented by RR Auction, the one-of-a-kind artifact signed by Declaration of Independence Georgia signer Button Gwinnett will be on display at the 42nd street Odditorium on Thursday, December 13, 2012 from 11:00am-3:00pm.
With only 51 examples known to exist and only eleven of them remaining in private hands*, the autograph of Button Gwinnett, who died in a duel in 1777, is the most uncommon of the members of the original Continental Congress who signed the declaration in 1776. This historic 1773 document signed by the Georgia representative is part of a complete set of all 56 men who signed the Declaration of Independence going up for auction on December 15, 2012. The Proctor-Sang-Newell Collection of Signers is one of only 40 complete sets of signers known to exist.
“The Holy Grail for collectors—by far the most desirable American autograph is that of Button Gwinnett, signer of the Declaration of Independence,” says Bobby Livingston, vice president at RR Auction, who adds, “worldwide he competes with only Caesar and Shakespeare.”
Michael Hirsch, president and general manager of Ripley’s Believe It or Not! Times Square added, “Robert Ripley dedicated his life to discovering oddities from around the globe and having the opportunity to showcase such a rare and significant name from American history at our Times Square museum is truly extraordinary.”
The signed Button Gwinnett will be on display at Ripley’s Believe It or Not! Times Square on December 13, 2012 from 11:00am-3:00pm only and is available for preview with paid admission to the Odditorium. For further information on Ripley’s Believe It or Not!
